Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay, Oklahoma 918-253-3222. Charles A. (Chuck) Montgomery, DVM, of Grove, OK, died Oct 23, 2017, following a brief illness. He was 78. Born in Tulsa, Chuck graduated from Jay High School in 1957. He received his B.S. degree in 1961 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Oklahoma State University in 1963. He was board-certified in both veterinary pathology and laboratory animal medicine. After running his own clinic in Tulsa for three years, Chuck was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966 and became the first preceptee in Comparative Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C. After finishing his residency, he served at the 9th Medical Lab in Vietnam. He returned to Walter Reed Army Institute of Research as the Head of Veterinary Pathology. In 1977, Dr. Montgomery moved to the U.S. Public Health Service, serving as the Head of Comparative Pathology at the National Cancer Institute. He later served as the Chairman of Pathology at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences School of Medicine and the Head of Toxicologic Pathology for the National Toxicology Program in North Carolina. In 1987, Dr. Montgomery moved to the private sector, serving as the Director of Lab Animal Medicine and Comparative Pathology for Biotherapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company developing cell therapies for cancer. In 1989, he became Director of the Center for Comparative Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, a position he held for nine years. He became Director of Pathology for Lexicon Genetics, Inc., in The Woodlands, Texas, in 2000. Chuck was known for outstanding accomplishments in the improvement of the care and quality of animals using biomedical research. He loved to teach and mentor young pathologists. He was one of only three veterinary pathologists to be named Chairman of the Department of Pathology in a medical school. He is the author of 106 publications, including one textbook and 8 book chapters. He also received many military awards and honors including the Meritorious Service Medal from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Unit Citation with oak leaf cluster for service at the 9th Medical Laboratory in Vietnam, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, the Vietnamese Civic Action Award and the Association of Veterinary Surgeon's Medal. , He and his wife Mitzi moved to Lake Eucha, near Jay, OK, in 2005 and he devoted his time to running his consulting pathology practice, ComPath, which he established in 1972. He retired for good in 2012 and spent his time fishing and boating on the lake. The couple moved to Grove, OK, in 2014. Dr. Montgomery is survived by his wife of 17 years, Mitzi Martinez Montgomery, his sons Clay Montgomery of Owasso, OK., and Bart Montgomery of Grove, OK, his daughter, Amy Bowser-Rollins of Jessup, MD., and three grandchildren. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Jay, Oklahoma. Charles will be laid to rest in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
