Georgene Sewell

March 19, 1922 — December 8, 2014

Georgene Morrison Sewell, age 92 and former resident of Bartlesville, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2014, at her home in the Inverness Village, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Georgene Morrison was born on March 19, 1922 in Apache, Oklahoma. She was the middle child, second daughter, of George H. Morrison and Maude May (McAninch) Morrison. She had a sister, Mary Ellen, who was 17 months older and a brother, James Joel, who was two years younger. Georgene was a lifelong Oklahoman, moving from Apache to Edmond and then to Walters where she received her education and graduated high school. She always said that Walters was a wonderful place in which to grow up. It was a town of around 2,000 people where her dad worked in a dry goods store, later owning a mercantile store. Her mother had been a school teacher, but chose to devote her time to being a full-time wife, mother and homemaker after they moved to Walters. Because of this, Georgene always felt she had a very secure and happy childhood. Georgene's family was active in the First Christian Church where her mother taught Sunday School and Georgene was active in Rainbow Girls. Georgene graduated high school in 1939 and furthered her education by attending Cameron College which, at that time, was a state junior college, just outside of Lawton, Oklahoma. After attaining a secretarial degree, she became employed with the American Red Cross in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. The timing was at the beginning of World War II. From that position, she went on to work for Southwestern Light and Power in 1944. When Public Service bought the company, her boss, G.I. Page, was transferred to Tulsa, so she came along with him and continued to work until 1953 when she went to work for the E.V. McCollum & Co. It was while working there, that she met Ernest Sewell, Jr., in February of 1955, and on June 25, 1955, they were married in Lawton where her parents still lived. Since Ernie worked for Phillips Petroleum Company, they made their home in Bartlesville. It was at this time she chose to become a homemaker. This would be a decision she would never regret as they had a very busy, happy, fulfilling and productive life. Georgene was kept busy, not only with her active participation in the First Christian Church, but also P.E.O. She was a volunteer in the hospital auxiliary, Red Cross blood bank, Bartlesville Service League, and the local Republican Party. For 25 years, she was a judge at all elections in Bartlesville. In between, she and Ernie enjoyed the local symphony, community concerts, theater, dancing, Town Hall, bridge and entertaining their friends in their home. They traveled extensively, some with Ernie on business and all over the world, together on vacations. It was their choice to visit all 48 states (this was before Alaska and Hawaii were states) prior to traveling abroad. Later, they did visit both Hawaii and Alaska, intermingled with trips elsewhere. The first year of their marriage, they built their home which they both enjoyed and had lived in until Ernie's passing in 1993. Georgene continued her home in Bartlesville before moving to Tulsa in 2005. She had a full and wonderful life with Ernie. He was her companion and friend. Georgene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernie; and her sister and brother. Although she and Ernie had no children, she is survived by several nieces and nephews, Mary Dale O'Shields of Colleyville, Texas, Bob Shelton of Destin, Florida, Albert Sewell of Independence, Kansas, Jon Wayland of Klamath Falls, Oregon, David Sewell of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Anne Cira of Chicago, Illinois and Tina Morrison of Okarche, Oklahoma; and a cousin, Mary Jane Anderson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
