Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove, Oklahoma, 918-786-2261. Gerald Lee Sergeant, 77, of Afton, Oklahoma, passed away November 6, 2018 in Joplin, Missouri. He was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, December 10, 1940, the son of Lyle Allen Sergeant and Grace (Lang) Sergeant.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Helen Irene (Hall) Sergeant, his infant son Michael and two sisters; Dorothy Ellen Kirk and Doris Jean Petersen.
Gerald is survived by his son Steven and his wife Charla of Grove, Oklahoma, Stepchildren; Shuncy Grove and his daughter Raelynn of Louisburg, Kansas, Kayla Grove and her son Bentley of Grove, Oklahoma.
His son David and his wife Shannon and their two daughters Mikala and Madison Sergeant of Grove, Oklahoma, Stepchildren; Brent Littlefield, his wife Kristin and their daughter Elara of Grove, Oklahoma, Charlie Bridges, her husband Jessie and their children; Landon, Lexus and Lakyn of Muskogee, Oklahoma.
As well as his brother William and his wife LaVeta of Springdale, Arkansas and their two sons and their families; Curtis Sergeant of Dadeville, Alabama and Terry Sergeant of Abilene, Texas.
Gerald attended high school in Southwest City, Missouri and received his undergraduate degree at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College and his Master's degree at Northeastern Oklahoma State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
His first teaching job was at Lecompton High School in Lecompton, Kansas in 1964. He then moved to Afton Public School where he taught social studies and coached basketball, track, football and weight lifting for 42 years. Afectionately known as "Sarge" by everyone he knew, he drove a school bus and taught driver's education classes for many generations of students. He enjoyed the co-workers, administrators and students he had the opportunity to know over the years. Gerald helped establish the first driver's education classes for Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. He was also a golden glove boxer and received a green belt in Hwarangdo. He served on the Afton City Council and worked in the wheat fields in Kansas with his brothers for a while.
Gerald was member of the First Christian Church of Miami, Oklahoma. He enjoyed cars (especially car shows), sports, boating, weight lifting and his family.
He will be missed by his family and many friends.
A visitation will be 5-7PM, Friday, November 9, 2018 at Grove Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home. Service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Grove's First Baptist Church with Brother Sam Smith officiating. Gerald will be laid to rest in the Hickory Grove Cemetery.
