Joe Leroy Hamilton, 84 year old Jay resident, passed away Saturday, October 17, 2020. Joe was born in Vinita, OK on April 13, 1936 to George Washington “Joe” Hamilton and Estella Fay (Newnam) Hamilton. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Mary Beth Holland on Christmas Eve, 1958. To this union, God blessed them with four daughters.
Joe was a man of many talents. If there was something he wanted to learn or accomplish, he did it. After graduation, he proudly served in the Army with the 45th Division of the Thunderbirds. He then became a Professional Civil Engineer, working as the County Engineer for Hillsborough County, Florida for 15 years and Franklin County, Florida for 8 years. He was a licensed airplane pilot, a certified S.C.U.B.A. diver, a lifetime member of the NRA, a member of Jay American Legion Post 195, and a faithful member of Dogwood Chapel. He enjoyed roller skating, square dancing, clogging, hunting, fishing, competing in black powder competitions, collecting coins, playing chess, as well as playing the organ and harmonica. He also loved to smoke meats. Back when Jay had Bill’s Corner, people would line up to buy the meat he smoked. Joe never rushed anything and if he was going to do something, he did it in full force.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Beth, his daughters Cheryl Carmon and spouse Justin Cagle of Spavinaw, Holly McClellan of Jay, Tracy Sylvester and husband Bobby of Jay, sister Cynthia Davenport and husband Denver of Vinita, 8 grandchildren: Rebecca Reisdorph, Rachel Alexander, Bobby Harold Sylvester III, Christopher Horak, Ruth Case, Mathew Sylvester, Sky Gibbs, and Cody McClellan, and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald Hamilton, and daughter Jo Lynn Hamilton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Dogwood Chapel Kids Summer Camp, 37394 S 543 Rd, Eucha, OK 74342.
