Karon Kaye Wheat, 80, of Jay, Oklahoma passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on November 24th, 2023 after a quiet battle with cancer. Karon was born in Hinton, Oklahoma on July 4th, 1943 to James and Addis Champion.
Karon had many wonderful memories with her sister Brenda and her parents while living in Ethiopia for four years. Karon attended Midwest City High School before studying Vocational Home Economics at Oklahoma State University. Karon met her husband, Charles Wheat, on a blind date at OSU and later wed on June 7th, 1964. She later received her Master’s Degree from CMSU with a Master of Science in Education. She accepted her first teaching position at Sumner High School in Kansas City, Kansas. Karon later accepted a FACs teaching position with Oak Park High School in the North Kansas City school district in 1973. She would retire from Winnetonka High School in the North Kansas City school district in 2002. During Karon’s teaching career she was exceptionally good at bringing people together and facilitating interactions among others. Throughout Karon’s years with the school district she was a pioneer in the Parents as Teachers Program and helped organize and facilitate needed childcare among pregnant teens. With this accomplishment of childcare Karon helped over 200 teen moms reach their goal of graduation. After Karon retired, she and Chick built a home on Grand Lake near Grove, Oklahoma. During her years in Grove as a philanthropic minded person Karon participated in and led many organizations such as UMW, Playmakers Community Theater, and Hallmark Club. She was also involved in the sororities Epsilon Sigma Alpha and P.E.O.
Karon was preceded in death by her parent’s James and Addis Champion and many wonderful aunts, uncles, and cousins many from the Fort Cobb area. Karon is survived by her husband of 60 years Charles (Chick) Wheat her two sons and their wives Christopher Wheat (wife Jaimee) and Craig Wheat (wife Jennifer). Karon also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren and Great grandchildren: Megan K Guyles (husband Chris), Alexander Wheat (wife Kayla), Christen Ireland (husband Dylan), Sarah Wheat, Kaden Wheat and Logan Wheat also great granddaughter’s Sophia and Evelyn Guyles. She is also survived by her loving sister Brenda George (husband Steve) and her nephew Clay George.
Funeral Services will be Saturday December 9th, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Church on the Hill of Grove: 1005 Leisure Rd, Grove, OK 74344.
