Leonard Woods

Leonard Lee Woods, 79 years old, lifetime Jay area resident, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013, at his home with his family by his side. Leonard was born in Jay, Oklahoma, on May 29, 1933, to Loyd and Lousie (Gregory) Woods. Leonard graduated from Jay High School in 1951. Leonard married Frankie Nichols on May 3, 1953, in Ozark, Arkansas. Leonard loved livestock, especially horses, and was an avid participant and rodeo stock producer in the "four-state" area. He loved spending time with his family and playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Leonard loved sports, participating in his younger years and having the option to play football for the University of Oklahoma, but chose instead to serve his country in the United States Army. He was particularly fond of basketball and he enjoyed watching his grandchildren play and was their number one fan. Leonard worked in construction most of his life. He spent much of the 1950's through the middle of the 1960's building houses in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After this time, he became a construction superintendent for Cherokee Nation. Leonard was known for his ability to "fix anything." Leonard also served on the Jay School Board for 14 years. Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Frankie, and his grandson, Caleb Barnwell. Leonard is survived by two sons, Lyndall Woods and wife Dianna, of Jay, Oklahoma, and Charles Woods and wife Cheryl, also of Jay, Oklahoma, three daughters, Lisa Dudding of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Leann Barnwell and husband Eddie, of Jay, Oklahoma, and Mikala Woods, also of Jay, Oklahoma. Leonard is also survived by two sisters, Loyetta Landrum and husband G.T., of Jay, Oklahoma, and Sue McNamara and husband, Kevin, of Grove, Oklahoma, eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services for Leonard will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Mt. Hermon Church in Jay, Oklahoma. Interment will follow at Duffield Cemetery.
