Lloyd Gardner Jr.

September 4, 1926 — October 1, 2017

ARNOLD MOORE & NEEKAMP FUNERAL HOME, BARTLESVILLE, OK (918) 336-5225 - Lloyd Earl Gardner, Jr. passed away peacefully on October 1, 2017 at The Journey Home. He was 91. Born on September 4, 1926, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, "Ace" was the only son of Lloyd Earl and Virginia (Brauer) Gardner. He attended the wonderfully progressive Cheyenne Mountain School where he excelled academically as well as athletically in basketball, track, ice hockey and golf, developing his golf skills and smarts as a young caddy at The Broadmoor. Ace entered the Army as an 18-year-old, serving his country in the final years of World War II in the Pacific with the 24th Infantry Division, Company C of the 21st Regiment. Upon honorable discharge he returned to Colorado College, graduating in 1950. He married college sweetheart Beverly Edwards, and together they travelled to Atlanta where he earned his Master's degree in Chemistry from Georgia Tech. Ace and Bev moved to Bartlesville in 1952, and he began work with Phillips Petroleum as a Research Chemist. Ace loved his work "on the island" at the Research and Development Center. He secured 56 patents and contributed to countless other patent applications on behalf of Phillips during his rewarding 34-year career. Ace helped everyone with everything, volunteering his time and many talents to his daughters' activities, his church and his community. Golf was his passion, and endless enjoyable hours were spent with family and friends in the early years at Sunset Country Club and then through a nearly 50-year membership with Hillcrest Country Club. He twice won the Hillcrest Senior Club Championship. While helping daughter Joan fine-tune her golf game, Ace also supported daughter Bo's interest in horses. Wearing many hats, he was dedicated to the Sooner Saddlers and area quarter horse associations. Never idle, Ace was a physical fitness advocate who enjoyed the workouts as well as the comradery at the Phillips gym well into his retirement years. Ace was a faithful parishioner of St. Luke's Episcopal Church which received the benefit of his handyman talents throughout the years and later as steadfast usher for the early morning Sunday service. Ace and Bev together were a force in the community, along with many lifelong friends, who volunteered time and creativity in support of Jane Phillips Hospital, the Service League, the Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra and Meals on Wheels among others. Everyone knew you could count on Ace. Ace was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Beverly, and is survived by daughters Joan Marie Gardner of Alexandria, Virginia and Janice Lee "Bo" Gardner and Christopher Somers of Los Angeles, California. Ace enjoyed his long, rich life in Bartlesville, and he and his family appreciated his last few years at Green Country Village and with the warm support of Eldercare staff and caregivers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Eldercare, 1223 Swan Dr., Bartlesville, OK 74006; Grace Hospice, P.O. Box 33234, Tulsa, OK 74153; or The Journey Home, 3406 S.E.
