Loma Palmer

ARNOLD MOORE & NEEKAMP FUNERAL HOME, BARTLESVILLE, OK (918) 336-5225 - Loma Eileen Palmer, age 100 and Bartlesville resident, passed away on June 19, 2017 in The Journey Home, Bartlesville. Loma Eileen Palmer was born on March 3, 1917 in Chelsea, Oklahoma to Porter Emmons Hale and Myrtle Rafferty Hale. She grew up with her parents, her older brother, Burlyn, and her younger sister, Virginia, in Vinita, Oklahoma, where she enjoyed a happy childhood and where she graduated from Vinita High School in 1935. After high school, she attended Northeastern Oklahoma Junior College and then left for Grinnell, Iowa to work for her Aunt Hattie and Uncle Jack Sangster. While there, she met a young student at Grinnell College named Glenn Palmer and they married in 1942. In 1943, while Glenn was in the Army overseas, they welcomed a baby boy, James Glenn, born in Vinita. In 1945, Eileen and Glenn moved to Ames, Iowa, where Glenn finished his degree in Architectural Engineering, with the help of the G.I. Bill. After moving to Bartlesville in 1948, where Glenn was employed by Phillips Petroleum, Eileen was a homemaker and was active in the JayCee-ettes. In 1952, the family added a daughter, Gina. Eileen created a very comfortable home atmosphere and was talented at decorating and the domestic arts. She was a supportive wife and an attentive and loving mother, active in the P.T.A., her children's activities, and she served as a deaconess and later Elder at the First Christian Church. After Jim and Gina grew up, Eileen and Glenn were given the opportunity to be transferred to London, England, where they traveled extensively and made a number of new friends. They returned to Bartlesville in 1977 and resumed their active roles in the church and the community. Eileen's skills as a grandmother were second to none. She was blessed with three grandchildren, Michael and Laura Palmer and Will Schiebl, and she showered them with love and attention, the memories of which they will always carry with them. She had a great deal of patience and a real talent for storytelling, weaving fantastic tales about wild characters and adventures. She also had a great deal of insight into people and their motivations, which was instructive and helpful. After Glenn passed away in 2011, Eileen was able to remain in her home until very recently. She celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at Hillcrest Country Club, where a good time was had by all. Rapidly failing health took her from us on Monday, June 19. She lives on in the hearts of her survivors --Jim Palmer and Billie Rodely of Oklahoma City, Gina and Paul Schiebl of Houston, her three grandchildren, and her five great-grandchildren, Aaden, Allison and Andrew Webb and Isaac and Sadie Palmer, all of the Atlanta area. She is also survived by her very kind and attentive neighbors and by her companion and good friend, Mary Vargas, whose caring help and attention kept Mother young at heart for a long time. We will always remember the lovely girl from Vinita with the exceptionally beautiful penmanship, the creative and artistic skills, and the baker of, hands down, the best chocolate pie in the world. Come and go visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9:00 AM-8:00 PM in the Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home, 710 S. Dewey Ave. Family will be present to greet friends from 6-8:00 PM. Services will be held on Thursday, June 22, at 2:00 PM in the First Christian Church, 520 S. Osage, Bartlesville. Rev. Kim Hames will officiate. Burial will follow in the Vinita Fairview Cemetery.
