Nelson Wilson

February 1, 1941 — October 4, 2019

Nelson Bascomb Wilson, resident of Nowata, Oklahoma, passed away on October 4, 2019 at the age of 78 years.

Nelson was born in Claremore, Oklahoma on February 1, 1941 to Watt Star Wilson and Eunice Florence Bluejacket. Nelson grew up the youngest of six children in Delaware Oklahoma where he attended school. Nelson played basketball and enjoyed hanging with his buddies, Chub, Albert and Ted. After High School, Nelson joined the United States Army.

When Nelson first met the love of his life, he ran home and told his brother Bill he had met the cutest girl. He said she was as cute as the world is round. On February 27, 1962 he exchanged vows with Mary Bauman and continued to love her fiercely all his days.

Mary and Nelson had two daughters, Ginger and Mary. As a devoted father, Nelson always put his girls and their families first. He raised them in a home filled with love and God. Any activity his daughters participated in; Nelson was there. In 1981 Ginger Wed Casey Johnson. In 1990 Mary Wed Mark Finton. When his grandchildren and great grandchildren arrived, he showed them the same love and support that his daughters and son in-laws received. Being a grandfather was one of his favorite roles in his life.

Nelson worked at American Airlines as a machinist until he retired. When wasn’t working, he loved to travel with Mary his wife. They traveled to Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and most US States. His favorite place to visit was Hawaii which they visited several times.

Nelson was a proud member of the Delaware Tribe. He loved teaching people about his heritage and telling stories about his family. He attended many Native American functions to show his support and love of his culture.

Nelson was very firm in his faith and enjoyed spreading the Gospel. He joined mission trips to Nicaragua for 10 years where he cooked while Mary did Dental work and taught others about God. Nelson also loved to teach Sunday school and participate in Church functions.  His love for helping others lead him to become a member of the Masonic Lodge as a Master Mason. He spent many hours helping people work on their memory. He was very patient and extremely proud to be a Mason.

Nelson was an avid Oklahoma Sooner fan. He loved to watch football and he made sure everyone knew that his team was the best. He loved his Sooners. He also loved hunting for Pheasant and Quail.  He was also a huge Nowata Ironman fan.

Nelson will be forever remembered by his wife, Mary, his two daughters, Ginger and Mary, his Son in-laws Casey and Mark, grandchildren and great grandchildren, his sister Ida, his sister in-law Joy Bauman and brother in-law John Friddle. He will also be fondly remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
