Bella Vista, Arkansas - Ruby Charlotte Mayes, 66, of Bella Vista, Arkansas, died Friday morning, July 14, 2006 at her home. Ruby was born August 1, 1939 at Vinita, Oklahoma to Robert Guy Thurman and Ruby E. (Hawkins) Thurman. She grew up in the Vinita area and attended Ketchum Adventist Junior Academy. Ruby later attended Ozark Adventist Academy at Gentry, Arkansas and then Southwest Adventist Junior College at Keene, Texas. After the death of her father, Ruby returned to Ketchum and graduated from Ketchum High School. She married Jerry Mayes on June 16, 1957 at the Ketchum Seventh Day Adventist Church. The couple moved to California. While in California, Ruby attended L.P.N. School and worked in nursing homes while raising three children. After nineteen years in California, the Mayes family moved back to Oklahoma and then on to Frederick, Maryland, where Ruby worked as a bookkeeper for Amazing Facts. The Mayes then moved to Oshawa, Ontario, Canada and Ruby worked for It Is Written as a bookkeeper. In December, 1995, Jerry and Ruby moved to Arkansas and have lived there since. Ruby was a member of Adventist Services Industries and a member of Springdale Adventist Fellowship of Springdale, Arkansas, where her husband was pastor. Survivors are her husband, Jerry of the home in Bella Vista; two daughters, Debra Hughes and her husband, Dean of Langley, Oklahoma and Annette Boyd and her husband, Tim of West Grove, Pennsylvania. Ruby and Jerry also adopted the children of their son, Jerry Robert Mayes, who died January 8, 1986. Their names are Michelle Weber and Michael Mayes. Ruby is also survived by two sisters, Sue Torres of Banning, California and Tammy Carswell of Midlothian, Texas; four grandchildren, Jason and Robert Hughes and Brendon and Darren Boyd; one great-granddaughter, Daphanie Weber and three step-great-grandchildren, Brittany, Tanner and Ian. Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at Springdale Adventist Fellowship, Springdale, Arkansas, with committal services at 3 p.m. that afternoon in Ketchum Cemetery, Ketchum, Oklahoma, under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home of Grove, Oklahoma.
