WORLEY-LUGINBUEL FUNERAL HOME - JAY, OKLAHOMA - 918-253-3222. Sequoyah Charley Guess, 62 year old resident of Oaks, Oklahoma, passed away on May 30, 2019.
Sequoyah was born on October 25, 1956 in Texas. He was the son of Charley Sequoyah Guess and Lylie (Moccasin) Guess. He was a well known and proud member of the Keetoowah tribe. Sequoyah was an author, a storyteller, a singer, a musician, a language speaker, a Tradition Keeper, a Sasquatch hunter, rattlesnake handler, one of the four original members of the Turtle Island Liars Club; Native American film maker and so much more. He was a self-published author and wrote several books including his debut title "Kholvn" in 1993, "Uktan" and two books in the "Red Eye" series. The American Book Awards honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 for his talents. Sequoyah was recognized by the Keetoowah Nation as a Wisdom Keeper, an honor he treasured.
Sequoyah was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers; William Guess, Debra Guess and George Guess.. He is survived by his wife Eugenia Guess, three sons: Charley Sequoyah Guess of Sayer, OK, Brian Thompson of Cherokee, NC and Anthony Calonaheski of Cherokee, NC, his sister Pam (Jumper) Thurman of Grove, OK. Sequoyah was blessed with two grandchildren; Marleigh Thompson and Camaron Thompson.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 pm, on Monday June 3, 2019 at Kansas Event Center. Services will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at the Kansas Event Center with Reverend Dennis Sixkiller officiating. Sequoyah will be laid to rest in the Dry Creek Cemetery after a short graveside service.
