Velma Chambers

July 23, 1923 — April 5, 2008

On July 23, 1923 a baby girl, Velma Arlena Chambers was born to Willie and Emma (Jackson) Shields, in Virgil, Oklahoma. The sun set on her life April 5, 2008, at Jane Phillips Medical Center, in Bartlesville, after reaching the age of 84 years, 8 months, and 12 days. She was educated in Virgil and in 1947 she moved to the Nowata area where she has made her home since. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Church Mission where she held many positions. She loved to volunteer and loved her church family very much. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. When she wasn't caring for her family or volunteering at the church she could be found sewing, fishing, attending to her flowers and gardens. A very loving person, Mrs. Chambers will be missed by all who ever met her. Preceding Mrs. Chambers in death are her parents Willie and Emma Shields; two husbands, Verdie David Alford, and Willie Chambers; a brother, H.B. Shields; and a sister Opal Greasham. Those she leaves behind to mourn her passing are ten children, Nathaniel Alford, of Nowata, Betty Kirkendoll, and husband Lawrence, of Oklahoma City, Mary Alford Hubbard, of Nowata, Gracie L. Tilman, and husband David, of Taylors, South Carolina, Tealla A. Phillips, of Oklahoma City, Willie Alford, of Nowata, Henry David Alford, of Nowata, Cordell Alford, and his wife Tonya, of Owasso, Harlene Alford, and his wife Carrie, of Columbus, Kansas, Velma DeSilva, and her husband Edward, of McKinney, Texas; thirty eight grandchildren; forty nine great grandchildren; twenty five great-great grandchildren; a sister, Juanita Akins, and husband John, of Hugo, Oklahoma; many nieces, nephews, as well as a host of other relatives, and friends. Services are entrusted to Benjamin Funeral Home, of Nowata.
